On Thursday morning more than thousands of Starbucks workers went out on strike and this is one of the busiest days for the company.

Union members of the Starbucks workers are on strike on more than hundreds of stores across the country and this is the one of the largest group strikes in a single day. And this strike happened on the busiest day and is known as Red Cup Day. And this is the Starbucks coffee giant limited edition hands out reusable cups. This is one of the most profitable days for the coffee giant in a calendar. They are considered collector’s items and customers line up in the morning to get their hands on a decorated cup.

But baristas like Josie Serrano say it’s symbolic of one of the union’s core demands: better staffing.

“It’s honestly one of those days that a lot of … baristas try to … ask because it’s always a pretty crazy day,” said Serrano, who works at this Starbucks store in Long Beach. ” Calif

Serrano, an employee of the company, says she has worked at Starbucks for about four and a half years. The store she works at is one of 264 who have voted to unionize over the past year and joined the nationwide strike on Thursday morning.

Staffing in Starbucks is just one of the issues that representatives of Starbucks employees United say inspired them to launch the so-called Red Cup Rebellion: a national strike in which more than 100 stores are holding their own picket lines. 

Serrano says the walkout is aimed at getting Starbucks to bargain with workers in good faith as the two sides try to hammer out new contracts.

According to the union, the company has retaliated against union leaders, and Starbucks lawyers have walked out of bargaining sessions or made last-minute rescheduling requests that make it difficult for members to attend.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” Jones told, adding that the company has provided Starbucks Workers United with ample notice of the bargaining session letters.

Jones said the company has likely been “overly aggressive” in trying to schedule bargaining sessions. He said the problem with the recent talk breakdown is that the union leaders at the table want to record or broadcast the negotiation talks on social media — not a legal one.

Under the National Labor Relations Act, you are not allowed to record bargaining sessions. And that actually is a clear violation of the act because of what’s being discussed.

The workers’ union denies that this is a legitimate barrier. They say what they are doing is including union members on Zoom calls, which they claim they are allowed to do.

Meanwhile, on the picket line, leaders hope to win over customers who might not be happy with the strike if it interferes with their chance to get a red cup. So, they’re offering an even more special souvenir: a union-designed red cup with the Starbucks Workers United logo on the front.

The employee Serrano says it’s a new kind of labor movement.

I feel like the movement has been very fun. It’s been very positive. And we just really want to be able to share that with our supporters … like this is this is a party.
